<title>Fair Trade vs. Free Trade: What&#8217;s the difference?</title>

While free trade has been increasingly maligned, the fair trade movement has become increasingly popular over the last several years. Many see it as a way to help people in the developing world and as a more just alternative to free trade&#45;&#45;which many argue creates an unfair advantage that tends to harm the poor.

In 2004, the global movement of Business as Mission (BAM) was captured in an occasional paper distributed by the Lausanne Forum for World Evangelization. The 10 guiding principles of BAM affirm human dignity and provide a foundation for businesses that seek to honor God in every way. Since the publication of the occasional paper, the BAM movement has grown significantly. 2012 marks the launch of the 2nd Global Think Tank on Business as Mission. This consultative process will reach every corner of the globe, invigorate the movement with case studies and lessons learned, and explore innovative development in sub&#45;fields like BAM and Human Trafficking, BAM&#45;in&#45;a&#45;Box, and BAM that alleviates U.S. poverty. In this lecture, Rudy Carrasco of Partners Worldwide gives an overview of these developments.

&quot; It just sounds like words sometimes and language and verbiage, but I&#39;m telling you, I&#39;ve been in the trenches. I know what it&#39;s like. I know how desperately we need jobs, real jobs, jobs that are not driven by a government handout because the government money will dry up, jobs that are not driven by a grant because the grant runs out, real jobs that comes from real profit and business owners do unique things.&quot; &#45; Rudy Carrasco, Partners Worldwide (USA)

&quot; We often hear that half the world&#39;s population lives on less than two dollars a day, and I think that statistic ought to raise the question in our minds of what happened to the other half? Half the world&#39;s population are living on more than two dollars a day. How did they get to be there?&quot; &#45; Peter Heslam, Cambridge University (UK)
